Shorinji Toraken Ryu Arts

Shorinji Toraken Ryu  -  Kempo-Karate

This art is considered the cornerstone of the AKKA arts, and consist of Kempo Jutsu, Jujutsu, Karate Do, and Kobudo with origins found in the Shaolin Temple of China. Through several masters who refined the art, Shorinji Toraken Ryu Kempo-Karate made its way from China to Korea to Japan, and finally, on to the United States.
Street survival is stressed in Kempo-Karate. The art is comprised of fighting techniques that use punching, kicking, joint locking and throwing, as well as vital point nerve striking techniques. Students learn how to defend against unarmed opponents, multiple attackers and threats from armed attacks. Defense against sticks, knives and guns are also taught.

Shorinji Toraken Ryu  -  Kempo Jutsu
Kempo Jutsu is primarily close range combat applications, utilizing a variety of disabling hand techniques, low kicks, forearm and elbow strikes. It also incorporates take downs, joint manipulation and combat throwing applications. You also learn to escape and counter attacks, various grabs and holds such as lapel grabs, front chokes, head locks, bear hugs etc. One of the keys to the system is it's short mobile stances and evasive foot work.

Shorinji Toraken Ryu  -  Jujutsu
In Jujutsu, as in Kempo-Karate, the emphasis is on practical self-defense. It is a traditional "budo" (or warrior art), utilizing throws, joint locks, vital point and nerve striking techniques, choking and pinning methods. Students are taught to break fall as well as how to recover from being thrown. The art is combat-oriented and is taught in this manner. There is little or no sport aspect to the style.

Shorinji Toraken Ryu  -  Kobudo
Kodudo training is conducted within Kempo-Karate and Jujutsu classes or in additions to them. The basic weapons offered in Kobudo classes are: Baton, Jo, Bo, Cane, Nunchaku, Sai, Tanto, and Yawara.

Shorinji Toraken Ryu - Karate Do
There is a strong influence of karate in the Toraken Ryu arts. Many of our blocks and kicks come from the traditional Japanese/Okinawa styles. Kempo has a more circular movement compared to karate's traditional liner movement. When combined both kempo and karate, will provide the martial artists with techniques that work in real street survival situations.
